Made of small blocks of limestone, different colors are used to form distinct mosaic-like patterns, shapes and symbols.

These are often of a nautical nature such as ships, spheres or wave patterns which represent Portugal's period of overseas exploration and conquest, known as the Age of Discoveries.

Senado Square, Macau
Senado Square
The most famous example of calçada in Macau is in Senado Square (議事亭前地). This is part of the historic UNESCO World Heritage listed center of the city. The square is here in a wave pattern.

The square is named after the Leal Senado, once a meeting place where Chinese and Portuguese came together during the 16th to 18th centuries.

Other examples of calçada are found throughout the city in squares and on walkways.

Look out for this art work beneath your feet. Also be careful as the stones can be slippery when wet.
