TMK Rap & Rolls

TMK Rap & Rolls

Pirata
Pirata

The Notorious B.I.G.

POTTED CHRYSANTHEMUMS

POTTED CHRYSANTHEMUMS THE LARGEST FLORAL PAINTING BY SANYU FEATURING PINK FLOWERS AND BLUE BRANCHES

Following the announcement of "We Are All Warriors - The Basquiat Auction," Christie's 20th/21st Century Art department is proud to unveil another important masterpiece that will be offered at auction in Asia this spring: Potted Chrysanthemums by Sanyu.

Potted Chrysanthemums
CHRISTIE'S IMAGES LTD. [2021]

This still-life is the largest floral painting by the artist to feature pink blossoms set against vibrant blue branches and is one of the few important late-period still life works still held in private hands, making it exceedingly rare. Within Sanyu's oeuvre, there are only five paintings that depict delicate pink chrysanthemums offset against peacock blue branches and leaves.

Among them, Potted Chrysanthemums is the largest of the five, and the work exemplifies Sanyu's ability to evoke colours inspired by Eastern culture.

Early works by Sanyu focus on the exploration of form, while later works display a bolder investigation of colour. Potted Chrysanthemums is thus a stunning example of Sanyu's mastery of colour, and the expressive potential of hue.

Building upon the world auction records for Sanyu's portrait, still-life and animal-subject paintings achieved over the past three consecutive seasons in Hong Kong, Christie's once again presents a museum-quality masterpiece to international collectors.

These results testify to clients' trust in Christie's expertise - unrivalled in the current international marketplace - and widespread confidence in the global market for modern and contemporary art, as Christie's strives to deliver only the highest quality works to the global collecting audience.

Leica APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH

Leica

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH.

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH.

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH.

APO-Summicron-SL 28 f/2 ASPH.

HKIFF45

Closing the festival is the Asian premiere of Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlinale, from renowned Japanese director HAMAGUCHI Ryusuke. For the first time ever, HKIFF45 will go hybrid with both in-theatre and online screenings and audience-engagement events. Today's announcement of its full line-up also takes a new format, pre-recorded at FWD House 1881 and broadcasted online.

During the 12-day extravaganza, over 190 titles from 58 countries and regions, of which 10 are world, 11 international and 43 Asian premieres, will be presented in close-to 230 screenings in theatres, and nearly 60 films are available through online platform. Multi-talented actor Aaron KWOK will return as the festival ambassador for the third consecutive year. Equally acclaimed is director Stanley KWAN, this year's Filmmaker in Focus.

The retrospective honouring KWAN will feature 13 of his seminal works and a commemorate book. The renowned filmmaker will also attend a Face to Face seminar on 5 April to share his insights on films, art, and life with the public.

Though filmmakers are unable to come to Hong Kong due to the health crisis, HKIFF45 has specially arranged two Master Classes by celebrated documentarians, Frederick WISEMAN and HARA Kazuo, who will meet the audience through live online streaming following the screening of their latest works, City Hall and Reiwa Uprising respectively. Audiences will also be able to connect with various filmmakers through seminars, post-screening talks, and other online events. Award-winning films of international cinema are the usual highlights of the HKIFF programme.

This year's showcase includes Wife of a Spy, with which KUROSAWA Kiyoshi is named Best Director at Venice; Golden Globes Best Foreign Language Film winner, Minari, by Korean-American director Lee Isaac CHUNG; Dear Comrades!, the Special Jury Prize winner at Venice by Russian director Andrei KONCHALOVSKY; as well as master documentarian Frederick WISEMAN's City Hall, Gianfranco ROSI's Notturno, and Maria SPETH's tenderly powerful documentary, Mr Bachmann and His Class, another Silver Bear winner from this year's Berlinale .

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Shochiku Cinema, one of Japan's most historical and influential studios, HKIFF45 is proud to present a special retrospective programme showcasing ten masterpieces from ten maestros including MIZOGUCHI Kenji, OZU Yasujiro, IMAMURA Shohei and YAMADA Yoji, paying tribute to the remarkable achievement of Shochiku Cinema. In addition to the Japanese masterpieces, HKIFF45 also brings to audience a selection of newly restored classics from world and Chinese-language cinemas. Highlights include Tih Minh, a rarely-seen silent era crime serial in 12 episodes by Louis FEUILLADE; Jean-Luc GODARD's Breathless, beautifully restored for its 60th anniversary; The Goddess, a silent masterpiece directed by WU Yonggang and starring RUAN Lingyu; TSUI Hark's The Butterfly Murders, a pioneering work of the Hong Kong New Wave movement, as well as four restored classics by Stanley KWAN. In particular, four newly-restored masterpieces by WONG Kar Wai, including In the Mood for Love, are must-see for cinephiles.

Mohammad Reza ASLANI's Chess of the Wind, a long-lost censored Iranian gem recently restored, will be screened alongside its successors, in a new section entitled "Iranian New Cinema", which introduces the exciting new works from promising filmmakers who herald a new movement in Iranian cinema. Their aspiring spirits can be matched by the filmmakers in the "Fantastic Beats" section, which will impress young audience with Kajillionaire by Miranda JULY, and popular Japanese films like Underdog, We Made a Beautiful Bouquet and All the Things They Never Said.

To celebrate its 45th edition, HKIFF has tailor-made a limited edition souvenir boxset, consisting of cross shoulder bag, zipper bag, Moleskine pocket notebook, masklab respirators, ticket holder / mask keeper, die cut pins, bag key clip and paper clips. HKIFF has also designed crossover merchandise, which include the Festival tee shirt, a crossover with Teemaker, now available on the teemaker website [https://teemakerhk.com/]; and the Festival mask, a collaboration with local mask brand masklab, now available on the masklab website [https://masklab.hk] and stores.

As part of its continuous efforts in making cinema accessible and affordable to the public, HKIFF will offer a special discounted fare of HK$28 to students, elderly, people with disabilities and CSSA recipients, hold free community screenings, and add Chinese subtitles to foreign language films. HKIFF45 will be held simultaneously in-theatre and online from 1 to 12 April.

Educating Young Giants Book Review

Educating Young Giants: What Kids Learn (And Don't Learn) in China and America

by Nancy Pine

Palgrave Macmillan, 2012

ISBN: 978-0-230-33907-1
193 pp

Educating Young Giants Book Review

China is not satisfied with its education and is trying to become more like America. America is not satisfied with its education and is trying to become more like China. What is going on?

Both countries are trying to prepare their students for the future, a future in which, according to one Stanford professor of Education herein quoted, schools must "prepare students to work at jobs that do not yet exist, creating ideas and solutions for products and problems that have not yet been identified, using technologies that have not yet been invented." Author Nancy Pine takes a look at American and Chinese education systems, where they came from, and both where they are going and where they need to go.

China's education philosophy comes from Confucianism and heavily promotes rote memorization at the expense of creative thinking. American education has traditionally been more geared to creative thinking, but with the rise in dependence on standardized tests, this is changing.
A history teacher at a prestigious urban school in Guangzhou summarizes what his understanding of his job is. "I spend every minute of every class telling my high school students everything I know about history. Their job is to take notes and memorize the material."

Before Chinese and American children even reach school age, their educations are dissimilar. For example, Chinese children tend to be told how to correctly play with toys, while American children are often left on their own to figure out how to play with their toys.
Also discussed is "prewriting," which is what happens when two- and three-year-olds are asked to write. In China, children's "prewritings" are small with angular lines that can be likened to Chinese characters. American children "write" in big swirls and fill up much of the page, looking more like the English alphabet. Another idea Pine explores is the difference in the purpose of education. She quotes one Chinese observer of education as saying, "People in China see math and science as a tool to change their destiny, not to explore the world."

Of course, discipline in schools is discussed. In China, it is expected, demanded and just plain de rigueur. In America, discipline is - often a huge problem.
Any discussion of education in America must consider charter schools. Pine goes there, saying that American charter schools are successful basically because of their forward-thinking. School administrators in charter schools don't have to overcome central planning and the laser focus on preparing students for standardized tests.

Tests in both countries tend to measure what bits of information have been memorized. Tests of the future will also need to test thinking ability.
While readers might expect that a comparison of two countries' educational philosophies, which quotes a number of academics, by the way, might be prone to flatulent verbosity, this book actually is down to earth and easy to digest.

Pine doesn't try to offer many suggestions to improve America's education world, but when she does, at the end of the book, it can mostly be summed up as: let's spend lots more money.
If you are a reader who thinks copious notes and a long bibliography are important, you should know that there are 10 pages of notes and six pages of bibliography.
The book was published in 2012, so the reader might be left to wonder what has happened in Chinese and American education since then. Perhaps there is a more up-to-date book, but failing that there is still plenty to think about and mull over here in this book.

Qatar Airways Cargo Announces Chapter 2 of WeQare – Rewild the Planet

Qatar Airways Cargo announces Chapter 2 of its sustainability programme WeQare: Rewild the Planet.

The cargo carrier is committed to preserving wildlife and endangered animals and has pledged to transport these animals back to their natural habitat, free of charge. Guillaume Halleux, Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo said, "We are concerned about the legacy we leave for the future generation. As the world's leading cargo carrier, we strongly believe in giving back to the community and protecting our environment. We all know that animals have an important role to play in preserving ecological balance which in turn ensures existence and stability of the environment.

Qatar Airways Cargo Announces Chapter 2 of WeQare
WeQare - Qatar Airways

Through Chapter 2 – Rewild the Planet, we want to encourage this preservation and that is why we are offering free transport to bring wild animals back to where they belong."

The airline has released a series of striking advertisements and a special video to commemorate the announcement and importance of Chapter 2. Through them, Qatar Airways Cargo aims to raise awareness of such issues among its customers and air cargo stakeholders.

All the chapters of WeQare are based on the core pillars of sustainability - environment, society, economy and culture and the programme has the backing and support of the employees of Qatar Airways Cargo.

The cargo carrier believes that such positive actions will have a ripple effect and inspire people to put sustainability on top of their agenda.

Qatar Airways Cargo will launch more chapters in the coming months, all of which are directly linked to the everyday activities of the carrier. Through such innovative programmes, Qatar Airways Cargo is leading the way for a more sustainable and socially responsible air cargo industry and playing an active role in building tomorrow's world.

As an inaugural signatory to the Buckingham Palace Declaration in March 2016 and a founding member of the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce, Qatar Airways has a zero tolerance policy towards the illegal trade of endangered wildlife. The cargo carrier's initiative to bringing wildlife back to their natural habitat is consistent with the airline's commitment to fight wildlife trafficking and illegal trade of wild animals.

Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH

Return of a landmark lens: The Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH becomes part of Leica's Classic Range

The Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH becomes part of Leica's Classic Range
Noctilux-M 50

With the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. Leica is re-issuing a lens that occupies a very special place in the company's history. Produced from 1966 to 1975, the Noctilux 50 f/1.2 was the world's first lens to feature aspherical elements and, as such, represented something of a sensation. Its light sensitivity (which is enormous even by today's standards) further contributed to the Noctilux's legendary status – as did its unique aesthetic: images captured at open aperture are imbued with a soft, almost dreamlike quality – creating an unmistakable look with an exquisite bokeh.

These distinctive visual characteristics have been carefully retained in the new Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2, whose calculation and construction adheres so closely to the original that the imaging results are almost identical. Despite the fact that it was originally calculated more than fifty years ago, the purpose of this lens is by no means limited to nostalgic experiments: once it has been stopped down to f/2.8 (at the very latest), the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 delivers sharp images that live up to any quality expectations of modern-day digital photography.

The lens also continues to be the most compact and light-weight Noctilux in Leica's catalogue.

The Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. will be available in two variants. Before the introduction of the Noctilux in 1966, silver was the customary colour for M lenses – with the exception of a few special-edition models aimed at photojournalists, which were given a discreet black finish. The Noctilux marked the start of the company's transition to black-anodised lenses.

Prior to releasing the Noctilux on the market, Leica produced around five silver-finish prototypes. They now count among the most coveted and highly priced M lenses in existence. The serial, black-finish Noctilux 50 f/1.2 was produced in a total volume of just 1757 units. As a result, any well maintained model is also considered a highly sought-after collector's item on today's market.

The black anodised variant of the new Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. with aluminium lens barrel is available now at HKD $60,000. The lens comes in packaging inspired by the original box, and is complemented by the same lens container that was provided with the original Noctilux 50 f/1.2 for safe keeping.

The silver chrome variant, which is released in parallel, will be limited to a production run of 100 units. The special-edition model features a brass lens barrel, a front-ring engraving that reads LEITZ WETZLAR (instead of LEICA), and comes in packaging that bears an even closer resemblance to that of the original.

It is available now at HKD $139,000.

The Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. is the third lens to be added to the Leica Classics Range, following the previous re-issues of the Summaron-M 28 f/5.6 of 1955, and the Thambar-M 90 f/2.2 of 1935.

Aesop & RÆBURN: Adventurer Roll Up

Aesop & RÆBURN: Adventurer Roll Up

Aesop & RÆBURN
Aesop & RÆBURN

With equal emphasis on style and function, the inaugural joint endeavour between Aesop and RÆBURN - the London-based responsible fashion pioneer - is a portable pouch for on-the-go hand care, available in three variants.

Handcrafted from 80% recycled cotton and available in sophisticated navy blue, the design features three purpose-fit pockets to house a trio of Aesop products. A co-branded cotton tape enables the pouch to be rolled up securely for neat portability inside any bag.

The contours of everyday life underwent a dramatic change in 2020, requiring new practices, regimens and products of protection and care. Purchase of portable hand cleansers along with hydrators to replenish skin, became a high priority.

Yet a convenient solution to carry these products seemed to have been overlooked.

The Adventurer Roll Up is specially designed to house three products to cleanse and hydrate the hands when commuting, travelling, or simply out-and-about: Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash, Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm and our new release, Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Mist.

As part of the collaboration, 300 limited-edition RÆMADE Adventurer Roll Ups - each unique and individually numbered - were handcrafted in East London using reclaimed 1960s aeronautical navigation maps.

Foregrounding the RÆBURN and Aesop commitment to sustainability, the RÆMADE Adventurer Roll Up uses maps of territories greatly impacted by climate change. They include Borneo - sadly known as an area of extreme deforestation - as well as the Aral Sea, which has tragically shrunk over time due to over-farming. Four roll ups can be made from just one map, leaving no fabric wasted.

A third take on the design sees RÆBURN and Aesop providing an Open Source Roll Up pattern, making this practical pouch accessible to anyone handy with a sewing machine.

In facing the challenges of the pandemic and the growing threat of climate change, Aesop has deferred to its fundamental belief in shared understanding and collaboration. The events of 2020 have undoubtedly affected the way we interact, not only with each other, but also with our surroundings when venturing from home.

To aid customers at this difficult time in their busy, productive and creative lives, Aesop has partnered with one of the foremost innovators in sustainable design.

The eponymous fashion house founded by Christopher Raeburn in 2009 is a global leader in circularity, pioneering the reuse of surplus fabrics and garments to create pieces of timeless grace.

Adhering to the Aesop values of integrity, respect and creativity, RÆBURN honours the cornerstones of great design. Durable, adaptable and eminently accessible, each creation expresses a deep humanity, borne of respect and in-depth research. It is therefore an immense pleasure for Aesop to announce this collaboration, and to launch this product thoughtfully created to enhance the everyday routine.

50th Anniversary of Sino Group

50th Anniversary of Sino Group

Sino Group

The year 2021 marks the 50th Anniversary of Sino Group (the ‘Group’), commemorating its effort in community-building and dedication to building a more sustainable society. Sino Group today presents Farm Together – an integrated green community project that promotes urban farming and brings the community closer to nature, in keeping with the Group’s Sustainability Vision 2030 commitment of Creating Better Lifescapes. With six farms currently operating across its properties in Hong Kong that span over 23,000 square feet, the Group has one of the largest urban farming footprints in the city.

Ms Nikki Ng, Group General Manager of Sino Group, says, ‘With a vision of Creating Better Lifescapes, the Group focuses its efforts on three interconnected pillars, namely Green Living, Community Spirit and Innovative Design. In collaboration with our green partners and NGO partners, Farm Together aims to encourage our community to re-establish a connection with nature. We promote sustainable living and wellness while celebrating local biodiversity in alignment with the mission of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Through Farm Together, we seek to plant the seeds of sustainability and grow a greener future with our colleagues, residents, tenants and the wider community.’ Sino Group sees sustainability as the core of its business and has introduced many green initiatives over the past 50 years, including the ‘Mission Green Top’ that has brought green inspiration to commercial buildings since 2008 and Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel’s outdoor organic farm, launched in 2018, which pioneered the industry.

Over 5,000 tenants, hotel guests, students and colleagues have participated in a variety of green tours, workshops and educational programmes over the years, and more than 1,000 kg of vegetables have been harvested from rooftop farm that has generated over HK$2 million of sales proceeds for the not-for-profit Hong Chi Association. These meaningful experiences and networks laid a solid foundation for the city-wide Farm Together project.

Urban farming footprint across the city Farm Together currently operates six farms city-wide, across the Group’s commercial and residential properties as well as hotel. The largest farm in the portfolio, spanning 11,840 square feet, is Sky Farm at the Skyline Tower, located in Kowloon Bay.

Featuring a wide range of seasonal plants from Romaine lettuce to sweet potatoes as well as being Hong Kong’s first rooftop farm at a commercial building to grow indigo plant for tie-dyeing, the farm is managed in collaboration with sustainable social enterprise Smiley Planet and local NGO Hong Chi Association. Other farms include 148 Farm (1,300 square feet) on 148 Electric Road that is a lush urban garden with mesmerising views of the Victoria Harbour.

The Group’s Hong Kong Gold Coast is home to four farms: Gold Coast Eco Farm (2,500 square feet), bringing the joy of urban farming to residents at Hong Kong Gold Coast Residences; Gold Coast Fun Farm (1,600 square feet), a green oasis where families and neighbours meet and share wonderful moments together; Gold Coast Farm (3,680 square feet), the first farm within a hotel in Hong Kong using organic farming practice to grow a variety of crops; and Butterflies and Herbs Farm (3,700 square feet) at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel, which features more than 20 types of butterflies and 40 types of flower and plant species.

These farms together grow over 150 plant and crop species including the seasonal plants snow jade cabbage and taro winter melon. Farm Together aims at promoting a more sustainable urban lifestyle through vertical farming practices and farm-to-table experiences. It is expected to generate a total of around 1,000 kg of produce annually to be shared with residents, tenants and charitable organisations to support the local community. Following this success, Farm Together has been extended outside of Hong Kong. The Fullerton Farm (2,152 square feet) at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has been launched to promote the concept of sustainability and biodiversity to the Singapore community.

Wide range of activities to bring the community closer to nature Committed to creating a better community that thrives in harmony by embracing green living and wellness, the Group’s Farm Together project offers a range of community workshops, programmes and tours – that teach participants everything from the farm-to-table concept to expert farming tips – in collaboration with urban farming experts including Smiley Planet, Rooftop Republic, Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve and NGO partners including Hong Chi Association, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, Warehouse Teenage Club and The Providence Garden for Rehab. The first round of community activities will open to public this April. Popular workshops that utilise the plants and herbs grown at the farms include the Tie-Dying Workshop where participants can create their own tie-dyed fabrics and accessories with indigo, and the Herb Soap Making Workshop in which participants can create their own sustainable soap using a traditional cold processing method with herbs and flowers. Those who wish to learn more about farming techniques and harvesting can enjoy the Mixed Farm Tour and Urban Farm Tour. Please visit the Farm Together website https://www.farmtogether.com.hk/ for details and fee of the workshops, with online registration starting mid -February on a first-come-first-serve basis. Proceeds from the workshops (deducting administrative cost) will be donated to New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.
