Making Waves - Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema, a touring film programme to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), will kick off during the 24th Far East Film Festival in Udine later this month.

This unique cinematic extravaganza is presented by Create Hong Kong in partnership with the Far East Film Festival (FEFF) and supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels.

Running from 22 to 30 April at Udine's Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine and Visionario cinema, it showcases a specially curated 13-film screening programme, focusing on new and emerging talents, and a virtual photographic exhibition that showcases the works of four unit photographers, each telling a unique story of Hong Kong cinema in a new artistic dimension and fascination.

"We started Far East Film Festival with a zero edition completely dedicated to Hong Kong films just a few months after the Handover," FEFF Festival President Sabrina Baracetti recalled. "We are honoured and proud to be the first stop of this exciting programme that celebrates Hong Kong extraordinary cinema with a rich and diverse selection of titles."

Create Hong Kong Assistant Head Gary Mak, in thanking FEFF's collaboration, believes the programme will demonstrate the uniqueness and progress of Hong Kong cinema since 1997. "With the government's increasing support in nurturing young film talents in Hong Kong in recent years, I am excited this year's festival will showcase many of their works," Mr Mak said.

Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union Eddie Cheung also pays tribute to the local film industry's creativity and resourcefulness.

"Hong Kong filmmakers have proven their talent and versatility in the face of many commercial and technological challenges with their successfully made films, not only for Hong Kong and Mainland China but for a global audience," Mr Cheung said.

"It is opportune that we can highlight their works in our celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR." After Udine, the Making Waves programme will travel to other cities, including Shanghai, Bali, London, Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tokyo, Warsaw, Prague, Dubai, and Hong Kong.
